Deborah Taylor
Deborah Taylor — Senior deputy editor
London, UK
Deborah studied natural sciences at Cambridge University and then went on to complete a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research, London. To fulfill a desire to expand her biological horizons, she joined Current Biology as an editor back in 1997, when the journal was relatively new to publishing research papers. Over the years, she has enjoyed working with the rest of the team to grow and strengthen Current Biology’s position as a general biology journal, increasing the breadth of coverage across all areas of biology in both research and front matter articles.

Florian Maderspacher
Florian Maderspacher — Senior scientific editor
Salt Lake City, UT, USA
Florian grew up in Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps, where his love for nature and all things living was kindled. So naturally, Florian studied biology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. After stints tracking roe deer and aquatic insects, he quickly came under the spell of developmental biology and genetics. His diploma thesis focussed on embryonic development in the flour beetle Tribolium. For his PhD, he studied pigment pattern formation in zebrafish in the lab of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard at the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen. In 2003, a serendipitous ad lured him to London, where despite his Bavarian handshake he landed a job as editor at Current Biology. He has stayed in this position ever since, yet moved around—cherchez la femme—first to New York and most recently to Salt Lake City, where he enjoys birding, reading, gardening, and the mountains, and hopes that the circle is not closed yet.

Jared Fudge
Jared Fudge — Associate scientific editor
London, UK
Jared grew up in the countryside of New Zealand and studied the genetic control of flowering time in legumes for his MSc at the University of Otago. His PhD at the University of Geneva, in collaboration with ETH Zurich, aimed to biofortify rice and cassava with enhanced levels of vitamin B1 and B6, towards alleviating certain micronutrient deficiency disorders. This led to a stint as a commissioning editor at an open access publishing house, before joining Current Biology in 2021.
